Our Speaker for 2013 is
Pamela Myer Warrander
Pamela Myer Warrander is one of Australia’s inspiring and pioneering women. Her story is one of growing up in Australia during the 1930’s and 1940’s; travelling the world sourcing innovations for the Myer retailing empire; of business success and failure; of artistic and cultural achievement; of heartache and betrayal; and ultimately of strength and survival.
Of humble Russian origins, the Myer family grew into an empire of untold wealth and prospect. As a young, idealistic woman, Pamela’s opportunities stretched beyond her dreams; she left Australia for Europe, where she met with the world’s greatest couturiers, dined with British and French royalty and found her adult feet.
After marrying into the British aristocracy, Pamela returned to Melbourne - her first true love - and discovered the joys and upsets of a society trying to redefine itself, and a family in flux. There were storms brewing - following her father’s death, friction within the Myer clan ruptured and shortly after, loss compounded loss.
Determined to move forward, Pamela channelled her energies into a great many areas: taking Australian art to the world for John and Sunday Reed and Sidney Nolan; reinvigorating Melbourne with the city’s brightest minds; even travelling to Russia to lift Saint Petersburg to its former glory. All the while, she refused to believe that a woman was not up to the task.
By turns uplifting and moving, Pamela’s story is one of privilege and pain, of fashion and travel, and of romance and tragedy - of a woman who would transcend all boundaries to live an extraordinary live, in her own right.
