    Your Elevator speech

So...all of a sudden you find yourself in a situation where you’ve got to present what you do in a matter of seconds.... literally....

You may be in an elevator, or perhaps at a function where you’ve been asked to stand and introduce yourself and you don’t hear anyone else’s stuff because you’re petrified that your turn’s coming up!  Right?

An elevator speech is your ‘first impression’.  It’s your opening line.  The curtain’s up and you’re in the spotlight.  It’s a marketing moment.

So, when you’re not sure what you should say, have a think about:

    • Why do you do what you do?  Why are you bothering to share this speech in the first place?
    • What makes you different? Go back to your childhood and have a think about anything that
differentiates you from the rest - what’s unique?  For example, did your mother tell you you had
healing hands?  Did you live on a tropical island?  Did you speak 6 languages before the age of 12?
    • What’s your business really all about - specifically?  What results do your clients get?
    • How can you help others?  What’s their pain?  What problems do you have a solution for?
    • How have you helped others in the past and what results did you achieve?
    • What if someone started working with you now?  What results could they expect today?
    • What if you’re totally stuck for words?  Write down your ideas.  Brainstorm. Ask others what they
know about you and what you do and what they think of what you do too!  Practice, practice,
practice.... and then practice some more.

When you close your elevator speech, avoid wrapping it up with the label “I’m a .............”
eg “I’m a lawyer, or “I’m a graphic designer”.  It negates everything you’ve just said beforehand and
puts you back in the stereotypical box you wanted to avoid in the first place.

Play with it, test it out and eventually you’ll find something that works.  When you’ve exhausted that
particular speech, you’ll have the confidence and creativity to come up with something new, smooth,
effective, professional whenever you need it.

    Go on... see what happens
